Some great news

I will be going on my first bike ride since April, today!

I probably won’t make it out of the neighborhood but at least I am on the bike. After my morning visit with the surgeon, I asked if I can go back to completely normal activities and he said he didn’t see any issues. I got to see the x-rays of all the hardware now inside of my neck. The palsy in my left arm is nearly gone. I just need to do some weights to rebuild the strength. So I decided I am going to blow the dust off the single-speed and take a short trip to see how it feels.

Today I was supposed to go in for additional surgery. The idea was to close up the hole in the back of my neck with what amounted to a vacuum cleaner. As much as I love gadgets and technology I became more and more reluctant to undergo anesthesia again. As much as I enjoy hospital food I really didn’t want two more days of eating it. Even though I live for the care of nurses and their wholly unflattering scrubs I just didn’t really want to go back in the hospital just yet.

Some good, some bad…

News that is. So I went to the surgeon for one more check-up and to ask why the drain hole is not sealing up. To also ask if I will make my September 1st season start date. Well the good news is that I am healthy!

Maybe I shouldn’t write this under the influence of narcotics, but there still is a lot of pain! Between the shoulder blades and in the upper muscle of the left arm. It is all but barely tolerable. The medication still seems to be working and last night was the first night that I actually slept for a complete 5 hour stretch without awakening or tossing and turning. That is an improvement.

The road to recovery

It is Sunday morning the third day post surgery. I am very sore and the drain they put in my back is still oozing. My neck hurts even after taking the oxycodone and acetaminophen tablets (Percocet) as per doctors orders. I am also taking celecoxib tablets (Celebrex) to fight inflammation. Here is a brief description of what I have experienced the last few days.

Upcoming surgery

I have been asked privately by several people how I got the the point of deciding to have neck surgery next month. Instead of writing out my answer over and over again I though I would post here the sequence of events.

Many have probably wondered why you haven’t seen us on the road lately. Well there is always the excuse of too much to do and not enough time to do it. There is the excuse of having to wait until our custom frame arrived. One of the other reasons that you don’t see us on the road very often these days is, like all of us, we are aging.

Heart and Health

With nearly a year since my little scare with heart trouble and an operation to insert 2 stents in my 95% clogged arteries, it is time for an update.

Over the last couple of weeks I was able to complete a nuclear imaging test and stress test to compliment the echocardiogram I had just six months ago. The results were exactly what I expected and perhaps a bit better than my cardiologist suspected.
