Hopefully this will be the final update until the frame is shipping!. If it’s not one thing it’s another. Believe me when I say that having a custom frame built is one of the most frustrating experiences anyone can ever go through. Broken promises, delays, lack of communication, more delays, more broken promises.

I had an opportunity to talk to Calfee’s Sales Manager and Brent Ruegamer directly. They were both very engaging fellows. They do take slightly divergent paths to accomplish the same thing.

Calfee seems very content building stock bikes in standard sizes and charges a premium for any kind of custom work. This is understandable and I am absolutely fine with that business model, As long as it fits what difference does it make really how you get there.

Selection Criteria

After much reading and asking questions Nicole and I are confident in the choices that we are making with regard to a custom tandem. We started with the premise that we could improve on our current set up and what we think it would take to do exactly that.

Nicole and I have begun the search for our next tandem. We have looked all over for single bikes and know pretty much what we want and what to look for in a single bike. Because of this we have made, what we felt, intelligent decisions on value and practicality with regard to our single bike purchases. Not all of this knowledge is directly transferable to tandems. So we have to start the learning process somewhere.
