Some good, some bad…

News that is. So I went to the surgeon for one more check-up and to ask why the drain hole is not sealing up. To also ask if I will make my September 1st season start date. Well the good news is that I am healthy!

The bad news is that I will not be riding on September 1st. As a matter of fact I will be going back in for another procedure to close the wound on my neck on August 20th. I will be at Charlotte Orthopaedic Hospital for another day and night while they open the wound, clean out any suspicious tissue and use Negative Pressure Wound Therapy. I had never heard of this before today.

The short of it is a computer-controlled therapy unit, canister, sterile plastic tubing, foam dressing and clear adhesive
drape. The foam dressing will go on or inside your wound. One end of a tube will connect to the foam. The other end of the tube will connect to the canister that connects to the therapy unit. The wound area will be sealed with the clear adhesive drape. The system will pull infectious materials and other fluids from your wound through the tube and collect them inside the canister. The end result should draw tissue edges together and reduce swelling in the surrounding tissue. All leading to faster healing.

We all have to do what must be done. So a few extra weeks means I have to work harder when I do get back. Also the NPWT unit does not appear to be the most portable unit in the world. I guess we shall see just how it measures up. Stay tuned.
