The Manual of Bicycle Repair is a comprehensive collection of books that guide you step by step through major and minor bicycle repairs. If you are mechanically inclined and want to learn how to replace a bottom bracket, for instance, this book can show you how.
Don’t go running out and buy a complete set of bicycle specific tools if you haven’t done any of this before. I do not think bicycle repair is for everyone, but if you like to tinker, have a few basic tools and a very few specialized tools, you could salvage a rainy Memorial Day weekend by catching up on routine maintenance. Many of the repair procedures in the book are very complex but some are relatively simple too.
I would suggest starting small and building up to building your own bicycle. Or take it to a shop when you come across a procedure you are unfamiliar with. The book in print form is available (all seven volumes) from the Barnett Bicycle Institute direct. The online version are incomplete and based on an older version, so please order direct from Barnett’s.
