The Bee Team New Years Eve Ride

Well, its official, 2008 is over. We finished the year with another successful Bee Team ride. The day was beautiful, about 60° and sunny. To say it was a bit windy would be a serious understatement. The wind really blew. On one section of road even a paceline was only capable of 14 miles per hour.

About 12 bikes / 16 riders showed for the ride. 6 decided at the corner of Shiloh Unity and Legend to do the shorter 32 mile route. Six of us were foolish enough to do 48 miles.

We have finally found out what JohnD considers a conversational pace. It seems that as long as he can talk to himself it’s conversational. There were sections when the pace was a bit high, especially considering it is the last day of the year!.

Curt of course did a whole bunch of pulling. If there was ever anyone off the front, either Curt was that person or was just behind their wheel drafting.

It was good to see Jeff out again. Jeff had one of his bud’s with him and I want to say his name was Pete, but if it wasn’t I am sorry I am just too tired to remember. And its always good to have Jack on the ride although he was probably a bit tired from the trip back from Jackson, WY.

So the six of us braved the wind and had a really great time finishing up the year in style.

I thought the pace was fine, a bit high at times, but no one said slow it down, so I had a conversation with myself or Curt who was drafting. LOL

John’s conversation w/ me (at 24.9 mph) went something like this, “Is there anyone behind you?”

So, John I’m Gonna Go Slow DeMeo’s idea of conversational pace is something a little slower than 25mph.

…and heck ya…I was definitely drafting

ooops…sorry and a great big thanks to Bud for leading us on a killer route…can’t wait to do it again soon!

Thank you Bud for being the “Master of Ceremonies.” I appreciate the que cards and the very nice pictures on your site. Yes, and the hard wind blowing made me almost home sick….

    See you soon.

    Jan.

Hey, just stumbled across your ride report–we’re under lots of cold and snow here in Utah, so nice to see folks getting out somewhere, though the wind… Ahhh, the wind! Kudos to all y’alls for ridin’!

    Peace and Happy New Year!

Well I thought it was awfully hard. We only did the 32 mile ride and we were the slowest there by a good deal. Perhaps it was because we hadn’t ridden for a while or perhaps the windage of a 4 person bike but we were wasted by the end.

    Thanks Bud for organizing!

@Pat and Gang of Three – I hope that the course wasn’t the hard part, just the wind. I am glad everyone had fun. The girls looked like they were pretty well bundled up, I hope they weren’t too cold. I just couldn’t do anything about the wind, it really slowed us down quite a bit toward the end of the ride. The last 10 miles were very hard for me with cramping in both quads.

@Jan – Thanks for being a part of the ride. The laminated cue sheets were just something a little extra to make sure anyone that wanted would have a cue sheet they could actually read when they were headed back.

@Curt – I had nothing left by the time we got back to the school plus I had boxed myself in even if I wanted to do anything. I am glad you enjoyed the route, I have several others with roads The Bee Team have not been on or have neglected. Maybe we should shoot for a different route every year. Kind of like explorers.

@John – It was a great ride on a great day, wasn’t it? If I could have just eliminated the wind on the way back it would have been perfect! As long as your talking its conversational, even if you are only talking to yourself, LOL.

I am happy everyone enjoyed the route.

Great ride. I don’t want to wait to once a year to try a different route. Maybe we can do it every other month. And yes it was fast at times I admit, but on Shiloh Unity, I thought people were behind Curt when I was pulling, and my computer was being funky saying 17 or 18mph, when Curt told me at the store that it was 24.9. Oh well, Jack Nelson was correct, if you rest a couple of days (usually Im at the YMCA 6 days a week and riding this time of the year once a week, so 7 days a week with no rest), i went to Tennessee to see my sister so i had 4 days of rest, my legs felt GREAT New Years Eve. Plus I had to prove to myself and Curt and Jack and Bud, for the August ride we did with Dudley hill where all you guys were pulling me back at 15mph and I was dying.

PS Maybe someone can help me with this. When Im in the front and pulling, I always think im going to slow for everyone.

    Great ride everyone

A computer with cadence on the new steed could help you maintain the pace! Just my thought from the back of the pack!

John, I am sure you meant to say “too slow” not “to slow” and I can honestly tell you that you are never too slow. I think what happens and what did on our NYE ride was that you were able to maintain a better speed when the wind gusted or the road turned up just a bit. That forced everyone behind you to either work harder to maintain the speed or to drop back just a bit if they couldn’t. Once a gap formed it was near impossible with the wind to bridge that gap.

Anyway its all good and we still managed to do the “Bee” thing and finish all together. That is what I like about you guys.

Still have to learn how to ride……and yes this was the second NYE ride and it was fun. We will make it a regular ride. Want to try that other 50 mile route you have.
