I told you it was fast!

So, yesterday I said that the ride was fast. Well at least the 15 miles I did was fast for me. After getting dropped and trying desperately to hang on, here are the stats I have for the ride to the first rest stop:

Just curious: how can you average 340 watts for an average speed of 20mph? Unless you are carrying a lot of mass, that average speed should be closer to about 250 watts I would bet.

I am not sure the wattage is accurate. It is not measured it is calculated. I use SportTracks with a power calculating plug in, it calculates based on specific criteria that does not change during the ride. Of course that is not how anyone rides. I would suspect that the only use for the calculated data is to compare it to other rides with calculated data. Next year will be different since I plan on purchasing a powertap to measure watts rather than calculate them.

Besides this I am a heavier rider, just not that heavy. So I would naturally produce more watts to achieve the same average speeds. But you probably already knew that. I would guess that the actual wattage would be somewhere between 250 and 340 watts, probably somewhere just under 300 watts.

Good idea on the PT, I have one now and it is very accurate (actually ran it with an SRM at the same time and had excellent results). Since you can produce 340 watts for 20 minutes, I would suggest you try the time trials at LMS if you don’t do them already. If you could get somewhat aero, I bet you would be pretty fast with those watts. Good luck and good riding -

Max, plan on doing that next season, most likely not on a single bike. My daughter and I want to see what we will be able to do on our new tandem. I might take the TT bike out when she is not up for the ride, just to keep form. We shall see.
