It’s always good to learn new things about cycling. I love to learn and research anything I can to further my bike knowledge. Usually that refers to components or bike fit. Sometimes it refers to a different type of cycling entirely. I have gone from single bikes to tandems. Believe me they are not the same. Where a single bike can be nimble, darting from one way to another a tandem can be cumbersome. Where a single might fly upwards, tandems trudge along like a slug.

The Assault on Mt Mitchell training ride number 4, aslo known as the Marquis de Sade ride is upon us. Starting from North Greenville University in Travelers Rest, SC and traveling up the Greenville watershed into the Blue Ridge Mountains. Just over 80 miles and almost 9,000′ of vertical ascent with some steep grades thrown in for good measure this is the perfect ride to help hurdle you toward the top of Mt Mitchell.
Did I mention the fact that it was windy this afternoon. Went out for the Waxhaw ride this afternoon and when James and I got there, there were only two other Bee Teamers and a whole lot of new riders. So I had to take it upon myself to lead the ride. Not that I really wanted to, it is hard riding in the back making sure everyone is ok. It is hard moving from the back to the front of the group then back to the back again to access everyone’s ability and/or condition. It was a hard ride. I should also mention that it was windy!
What a beautiful day for a ride. I don’t know how many other riders were there but the turnout looked great. Nicole and I had some things we wanted to try on the tandem. The start was great, out with the front runners but about 8 miles into the ride we hit a bump hard and Nicole’s saddle decided it would be a good time to tilt up in the front.

The BSG is a challenging to strenuous full English century – 100 mile loop ride starting and ending at the Valle Crucis Elementary School, approximately 5 miles south of Boone, North Carolina. The route roughly circles Boone through the outskirts of Watauga County, the heart of North Carolina’s High Country. The terrain is constantly changing with hills of all lengths and curves too numerous to count. The cumulative climbing elevation is 13,000+ feet, with the climb up to the gap at Snake Mountain, milepoint 63, reaching an 18-20% grade near the top.
