The Bicycle Inn in Bakersville NC presents Roan Moan 2008

The Bicycle Inn12th annual Roan Moan offers a strenuous quarter metric, metric, century and barbecue. At the hottest time of the year, come up to one of the prettiest and coolest places ever. The metric and century rides tour the old Tweetsie Railroad Grade and Doe River before the 7 mile “moan” up Roan Mountain. Families and friends can tour the galleries, Penland Craft School, or welcome the riders crossing Roan Mountain at Carvers Gap. All funds go to Bakersville’s fire and rescue services.

There must have been over 50 riders at the start. We nearly filled the Locust City Park parking lot. Jeff picked out a good route with just a little bit of traffic in some unavoidable spots. The weather started out great, and for those that finished early it stayed that way. I on the other hand got caught in some rain near the end of the ride.

At the Sea Otter Classic this week SRAM is showing off the 2009 stuff. Most of the upgrades are happening to the Rival group inheriting a lot of the technology that went into SRAM Red this past year. Rival brifters gain adjustable reach, the same paddle as Red and big ring trim just like Red. They are also now carbon levers.

It was the first fast ride since my return to riding. There were a few that dropped of the pace. I barely managed to hang on with the help of skipping a few pulls in the front. The route was slightly different than the usual Saturday Morning ride, it had a few less turns and avoided a couple of really busy streets. But even on a Saturday Morning there was a lot of traffic, too much traffic. No one was in danger other than a woman driving a Mercedes thinking that the left lane belonged to her in spite of oncoming cars, trying to pass us.

The date is set for the 9th Annual American Red Cross Tour de Furniture. The event will be held on Saturday August 2, 2008 in High Point, NC. The event features a 10 mile Family ride, a 50K road ride, a 50 mile road ride and a 100K road ride.

The ride features sections of the High Point area bike trails as well as other scenic back roads through sections of Guildford, Forsyth and Davidson Counties.

Today was the first of the Freewheelers Mt Michell training rides. We got to North Greenville University about 20 minutes before the start. Just about the time it was going to start it started raining hard, and there was thunder and lightning. We decided to wait in the truck until it passed. We finally start and we did get a little wet in the beginning. but the rain stopped and the roads dried up and we had a pretty good ride.
