While I really love the frame I ride, a 2007 Lemond Zurich(carbon) I think that Lemond should have considered how he framed his statements and perhaps should have been much more careful in what he said about Armstrong. Lance Armstrong is a Trek bicycle golden boy and he is the marketing tool with which the brand has moved into the position in the market that it has achieved.
Greg, on the other hand, no matter how right or wrong his statements is not helping Trek or Lemond bikes in growing market share and Trek is simply doing what they feel they need to do for their business.
All that said, Mr. Lemond did his best talking, not with his mouth so much as he did with a bike beneath him. I am still a fan of the racer no matter how this all works out.

While I agree that the world will likely not see another racer such as LeMond, I don’t believe everything he said was bad for Trek, LeMond or cycling in general. He is very passionate about his sport and wants to see doping dealt with. The problem I have is that he does jump to conclusions and accuses without always having first hand knowledge. This is how I interpret his statements about Lance.

As far as his bicycles, I don’t believe either LeMond or Trek did that line of bikes any favors. Just as Trek has done with Klein and Gary Fisher also. They took a bike that was the top level of performance in steel and turned it into a Trek clone, in the case of LeMond bikes. They took one of the most innovative Aluminum builders with wild paint and turned it into a Trek clone, in the case of Klein. I don’t follow MTB so I can’t say much about Gary Fisher.

This parting of the ways between Trek and LeMond will not be pleasant and there will be no real winners. I hope it doesn’t turn into some long drawn out battle and that LeMond will survive. Maybe this is the wake-up call they needed to get back to building bike in the niche that they filled so well in the past (pre-Trek).
