Nicole and I decided it would be a good day to leave the tandem home and ride single bikes. Let me say first, that Nicole is ok and went to school this morning without any fuss, more details later.
It was an amazing turnout for the Bee Team rides. There must have been 40-45 riders there. The normal group was split in two and left about 5 minutes apart. The beginner group left after that.
There was the usual slow and fast spots. With a big chase down Crow Rd where speeds probably averaged 23-25 mph, of course with some sections over 30 mph. regrouping at the intersection of Crow Rd and Potter.
Besides Nicole and me, I also brought my neighbor Randall. We took a shortcut near the end of the ride to avoid any last second climbing and rough roads and went down Parkwood School Rd the Old Waxhaw Highway. That is when we had our little mishap. I am going to tell the story the way it actually happened, since I know by the end of school today the story will be exaggerated.
About a mile from the finish at Waxhaw Elementary School we were traveling single file paceline. I was leading setting an even pace of about 18-18.5 mph, Nicole in the middle, Randall following her. Nicole overlapped my rear wheel then for some unknown reason thought she had enough room to get right behind me and pulled her front wheel into my rear wheel. She panicked and jerked the handlebars right then went down hard. Randall appears to have then run over her back wheel. Both Randall and I managed to stay upright.
Nicole hit the ground hard, cracked the left side of her helmet and slid just a little on the pavement. She had abrasions on her right cheek, shoulder and thigh. Aside from some stinging when cleaning out the wounds then using generous amounts of NEOSPORIN® she appears and says she feels fine.

I hope she has gotten over the worst of the pain. Please tell Nicole we are still thinking about her, and hope she recovers fully soon! The only time I didn’t hurt from the road rash after my first topple, was when I was riding.
Also take care of that ticker of yours too.
