In this first annual cycling event, each registered rider will pick up a random playing card at each of the four rest stops with the final card being received at the finish.

1st place wins $400, 2nd place wins $200 and 3rd place wins $100. It doesn’t matter how fast or slow you are, just the draw of the cards. All the proceeds from the event will go to the Matthews Help Center and the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center.

As many who have ridden with me know, I am not the smallest person on the group rides. I am no longer the biggest dropping from a high of 346 pounds in 2005/2006 to my current stable weight of just over 200. As a bigger rider it is sometimes hard to find clothing that fits. Through research and personal experience I have found a few places that have clothing for us bigger riders. Here is my list of where to find stuff that fits.

Last week About.com posted an article by David Fiedler about buying bicycle tires. While it has some good advise, there are a few things that are plain wrong. I am surprised that someone who claims to be an expert with hundreds of articles and two books would publish an article like this without even checking his facts first.

JohnD and I went out today to ride a metric century from Mint Hill toward Polkton and back. It was a beautiful day for a ride. Warm and sunny. We had very little traffic going out and with a tailwind and generally downhill route we were able to average nearly 20 mph for the first half of the ride.

This was my first ride with this group and on this route. There is a considerable amount of riding within Matthews and Charlotte, but once out of town you have some very good roads in Cabarrus County and the very northeastern part of Union County. I have included splits for each mile so you can see for yourself when the ride speeds up or slows down. The splits also give you an idea of the elevation gain per mile, red means you are generally going uphill and green downhill. Please note that the elevation changes are not cumulative for the splits.

Miracle HillThis challenging ride will begin in downtown Greenville and end in Pickens County. The ride will include Paris Mountain and Caesar’s Head with nothing held back in the foothills of North Carolina. 75 and 40 mile ride options are also available.
