The training starts now

Yesterday was the day to sign up for the Assault on Mt Mitchell. Only 1000 riders get to climb to the top. With my number and credit card in hand I signed on to Active.com at 3:58 PM waiting for 4:00 to arrive. By 4:05 PM I was signed up and I ended up with rider number 895. The Freewheeler’s site says that all slots were allotted in seven minutes!

Now comes the hard part, my daughter has been signed up for the Marion ride for a month now. We will be ramping up the tandem mileage along with the single bike mileage so that we can peak by the first week in June.

There will be some suffering and whining and hurt feelings. My daughter may complain some too. We are planning to do the Tigerville training rides, not all of them on the tandem, probably just one or two. The plan is to ride the Assault on Marion two up then I will switch bikes in Marion and complete the Mt Mitchell portion on my single bike.

So if you are out riding in Union County and see a big blue two wheeled streak with two woefully overworked riders on it, just say hello and wish us luck.
