Union County Cyclist Killed

This info has now been confirmed, the cyclist involved was a resident of Champion Forest and is survived by a wife and two daughters. Again as more details come in I will update this post.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family in this time of grief.

Just got this info in an email this morning, will provide more details as available.

The following are some comments that were made by a NC Trooper talking with a few of the “Zoo” riders that came in late yesterday afternoon.

“A NC State Trooper came in the lot and asked us if we knew of a rider missing.  A cyclist was killed yesterday afternoon on Cuthbertson Rd around 4:30 pm and he didn’t have any ID.  The cyclist had a blackberry, but it was locked and the phone company wouldn’t give out any information to the Trooper.  The Trooper said that the rider was just topping a hill on Cuthbertson Rd and a woman coming the other way crossed the center line and hit him head on.”

Brian Rau was my brother-in-law. Thank you very much for posting the message about the accident and for the kind thoughts. Brian’s family is devastated, but strengthened by the support of those who knew him.

I am in Des Moines but will be traveling to Charlotte later this week. I found this website while looking for information about the accident. We really didn’t know anything about what happened. Thank you.

Brian is my neighbor and this tragedy has affected the entire neighborhood here at Champion Forest. He was very well liked by everyone. We really appreciate the outpouring of condolences and support from the cycling community. Please remember to keep Brian’s wife and two young daughters in your prayers.

Jim, thank you for you thoughts. I am planning on keeping a post about Brian’s tragic death on the top of my home page for the remainder of the week. I want everyone that visits here to know what has happened here. I also think that some good will come out of this as others will see a caring cycling community. I know that his Champion Forest neighbors are doing all they can to assist the Rau’s in their time of grief.
