Share the Road PSAs

The San Luis Obispo County Bicycle Coalition created some public service announcements about Sharing the Road. I have posted them here so we can see what other areas of the country have done and what can be done here to to raise awareness and promote cycling and walking within our county.

FireShot capture #1 - 'w16-1_gif (GIF Image, 433x649 pixels)' - www_trafficsign_us_650_warn_w16-1_gif I frequently read other weblogs that deal with cycling in North and South Carolina. One interesting site that I found was bike greenville. James has some interesting insights in cyclist safety issues and two of his posts struck me as things that could be done in our county also.

The funeral service for Brian Rau is this Wednesday January 30 from 3-4pm at Weddington United Methodist Church on the corner of 84 and Providence. The funeral service is open to all that would like to attend.

A cycling story

As many of you know, my daughter and I ride our tandem most every Sunday. What some of you don’t know is that she is a High School Junior at Central Academy of Technology and Arts in Monroe, NC. One of the full load of classes that she is taking is Advanced Placement English. Last week she wrote a fictional story about a cyclists ride up a mountain. Her teacher was impressed with her writing and told her it was one of the best pieces she has written all year, so she decided to post it on her blog, A Day With A Monkey. Click the story title below to read the entire story.

Brian Rau, a resident of Champion Forest in Waxhaw, NC was killed Sunday afternoon when a motorist crossed the center line on Cuthbertson Road and struck him head on. Mr Rau is survived by a wife and two daughters.

According to some sources, Brian had just recently returned to cycling after several years off the bicycle. He was on his way to meet other cyclists for a Sunday afternoon ride. The accident happened sometime around 3:30 PM.

There are unconfirmed reports about the cause of the accident and the sequence of events that led up to Brian’s tragic death. I will only post what I can confirm.

If any of my readers have any stories about riding with Brian, please post a comment here. I would also ask that if anyone has any suggestions on how we may reach out to his surviving family post comments also. More details as they become available.
