Completed the inaugural run of the Matthews Rotary Club Veteran’s Children’s Fund Metric Century and Chili Cook-off. The Chili thing has been going on for years, the Metric was new. Accomplished 1/2 of the goals I set for the ride. Wanted to complete in 3:30 ride and 3:45 total. Managed 3:30:48 for 60 miles, but the stops were too long, total time was 4:09.
Brutal wind all day long, some stretches the headwind dropped my speed to about 10 mph. John D was an animal yesterday. He dragged me along for quite a few miles near the end. I just didn’t have anything left when we hit Antioch Church Road. Both quads were cramped, I was just trying to manage the pain. I also think that Micah was a little surprised that some of us old guys could ride so strong into that headwind.
A side note: Some of the Chili was good!
Totals:
- 59.8 miles
- 03:30:48 time
- 17.0 average speed
- 2200 feet ascent
- 54° average temp
- 145 average bpm (with 2:14 in zone 4)

The irony was, I purposely abused my legs all week at the YMCA so they would be tired and force me to ride slow at the charity ride. What if I didn’t abuse them? I think I would have had a Personal Best for the distance with all the wind. Not bad for an old guy. I was pretty strong Sunday too. I think I will publish a new training regimen, Kill your legs and you will go faster. HAHAHAHA.

My gas tank was definitely empty from the get go. I hate WIND!!!!! Either way any ride is a good ride.
